Suspected members of armed robbery gang gunned down

SUNGAI PETANI: Three Indonesians, believe to be members of an armed-robbery gang were gunned down after they opened fire on a police team in an oil palm estate in Kuala Ketil here early today.

According to ther NST, in the 4.30am incident, the suspects in their late 20s were spotted travelling in a Proton Perdana by an Ops Cantas Khas team at a T-junction in Batu 9, Bukit Selambau here.

The team, which was travelling in two cars tried to flag down the car upon sensing something amiss.

However the car driver sped off, prompting the team to give them a chase.

The suspects' luck ran out when they entered the Kuala Muda oil palm estate before firing several shots on the pursuing team.

The trio were killed on the spot in an ensuing gunfire.

Kedah police chief Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said one of his men was shot during the crossfire but escaped unhurt.

"The team later seized a .38 pistol, parangs, house-break in tools and some drugs in the car," he told Pressmen at the scene.

Ahmad said checks showed that that the car was reported stolen in George Town, Penang.
